Living Aboard a Narrowboat in a Pandemic

During 2022, across the industry we have seen a real boom in boat sales, thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic and the fact that many of us have been forced to stay indoors, and holiday at home for the best part of 2022 and even now as we move into 2021.

The Coronavirus pandemic is a global disaster, one that we must all play our part in by abiding with social distancing rules and locking down when we’re told to do so. For many of our customers, that could mean lockdown aboard a narrowboat - for many this could be a perfectly reasonable situation, with families across the country who do use their boat as their main home residence. For others though, lockdown aboard a narrowboat can only be described as extremely difficult, due to the confined living space.

In terms of social distancing, a narrowboat does indeed offer the perfect solution, it’s a contained environment that can be placed away from other people, therefore it’s pretty easy to distance yourself and your family away from others aboard a narrowboat, however it’s distancing inside the cabin that could become a bit more of an issue. Close, conditions does mean you could quite literally be living on top of each other - a far from ideal situation if you do have a large family.

Outside of the ‘lockdown’ periods, we have of course been able to enjoy holidays in the UK this year, and indeed many people have turned to the UK’s rivers, waterways and canals to enjoy a bit of respite and some time away. The narrowboat set up is perfect for getting away for a COVID secure break, especially if you’re lucky enough to own your own narrowboat or widebeam boat as this way you can really ensure your boat is safe to visit, that’s why we have seen boat sales boom this year, because a narrowboat can offer you and your family a safe way to escape the city, to enjoy the UK’s stunning waterways, in a safe, and healthy way.

Above all, it’s important that no matter how you must spend your time in lockdown, that you do so in a safe way and remember to take care of yourself. If you’re locked down aboard a boat this time, make sure you get out for your daily exercise (remembering your face covering and social distance) and make sure you take the time to do stuff you enjoy aboard your boat. Eat well, sleep well and together we’ll get through this, ready to take on the UK’s waterways once again this Spring and Summer!
